More about this artwork

"Study of a Girl's Head," created in 1899 by John William Godward, is a stunning example of the artist's acute attention to detail and his mastery of capturing the delicate grace of his subjects. This portrait, though simple in composition, conveys a deep sense of serenity and introspection. The painting presents a profile view of a young woman, rendered with exquisite softness. Her gaze is directed downwards, adding a sense of modesty and contemplation. The gentle curve of her cheek, the elegant line of her neck, and the soft tresses of her richly colored hair exhibit Godward's skillful rendering of texture and light.Dressed in a diaphanous gown that hints at classical or neo-classical attire, the subject epitomizes the Victorian fascination with the ancient world, which Godward frequently explored. The soft folds of her golden-hued dress contrast beautifully with the deep, enigmatic teal of the background, emphasizing the warmth of the subject’s complexion and the subtleness of her expression.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
