More about this artwork

John William Godward’s painting *Contemplation* (1903) invites the viewer into a moment of serene introspection through its captivating depiction of a young woman. Painted in 1903, this artwork is a wonderful exemplar of the neoclassical style that Godward was renowned for, characterized by its vivid realism and romanticized portrayal of classical themes. In this painting, the subject is captured in a close-up, semi-profile view, which emphasizes her delicate features and serene expression. She wears a luxurious deep red gown that drapes gracefully off her shoulders, suggesting both nobility and elegance. The richness of the fabric is highlighted by the sheen and texture that Godward masterfully renders. Her dark hair is gently pulled back with a slender gold headband, a subtle but elegant accent that complements the simplicity and purity of her look. The background, though muted, features classical architectural elements and a muted, patterned backdrop, which frame the young woman in a timeless, contemplative space. Her gaze, directed away from the viewer, and her soft, thoughtful expression align beautifully with the title of the piece, *Contemplation*. This artwork not only showcases Godward’s skill in depicting the fine details of fabric and flesh but also his ability to capture the subtleties of human emotion and thought.*Contemplation* is more than just a visual treat; it’s a portal to the quiet moments of reflection that are universally felt across time and culture.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
