More about this artwork

"An Edition de Luxe," painted by the illustrious John William Godward in 1920, encapsulates the refined tranquility and exquisite detail characteristic of his work. In this arresting circular composition, Godward portrays a serene woman seated in a classical setting, an embodiment of leisure and elegance. The woman, clothed in a flowing ensemble of vivid and richly pigmented fabrics, including a deep fuchsia and a verdant green, is depicted engaged in the delicate task of reading from a golden scroll. Her costume, festooned with gilded embellishments and paired with an ornate purple headband, suggests a setting of wealth and status reminiscent of classical antiquity.Adding depth to the composition, Godward includes a meticulously rendered marble bench adorned with a sculpted lion's head, situated beside a lush arrangement of roses in full bloom, enhancing the ambiance of cultivated serenity. The inclusion of exotic elements, such as the leopard skin draped alongside her, amplifies the luxuriousness of the scene. This painting not only showcases Godward’s meticulous attention to detail and his passion for classical themes but also offers a window into an idyllic past, where beauty and calm pervade everyday life.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
