This second child, donning a rustic-looking drapery, closes their eyes in a gesture of pure affection and tenderness towards the creature. The backdrop of lush greenery and trees under a soft sky adds to the peaceful and almost idyllic quality of the scene, suggesting a timeless moment of connection between humans and nature. Bouguereau's masterful use of soft lighting and detailed brushwork highlights the innocence and delicate textures in the painting, from the children’s expressive faces to the soft wool of the lamb. This artwork is a stellar example of Bouguereau's ability to capture the beauty and purity of youth, and it resonates as a celebration of pastoral life and the simple joys it offers. William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
