More about this artwork

Artist:Year:"Orestes Pursued by the Furies" is a compelling masterpiece by the celebrated 19th-century French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. This dramatic work captures a powerful moment from ancient Greek mythology, where Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, is tormented by the Erinyes, also known as the Furies, sent to pursue him as punishment for the matricide of his mother. In this intense depiction, Bouguereau's exceptional skill in realism and his adept use of chiaroscuro techniques are prominently displayed. The painting shows a terrified Orestes cowering in the center, his body twisted in anguish and his face contorted with fear. He is surrounded by three ethereal yet menacing figures representing the Furies. These ghostly apparitions, shown with a furious and relentless demeanor, are dramatized further by their windswept hair and the dramatic folds of their garments, which enhance the overall turbulence of the scene. The Fury to the right, wielding a blood-stained club, and the central figure gripping a dagger, heighten the sense of imminent danger. The dynamic composition and the stark contrasts of light and shadow imbue the painting with a vigorous energy and palpable tension, enveloping the viewer in the mythic narrative's emotional depth and the torment of Orestes. This painting not only highlights Bouguereau's masterful rendering of human emotion and anatomy but also his profound ability to convey narrative through visual art.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
