More about this artwork

"The Song of the Angels," painted in 1881 by the renowned French artist William Bouguereau, is a captivating work of art that vividly encapsulates divine harmony and maternal affection. This ethereal painting features the Virgin Mary dressed in a rich blue robe, cradling the sleeping Christ Child. Surrounding them are three angels, each exquisitely rendered with tender expressions and delicate, translucent wings. In this serene setting, the angels play instruments; one holds a violin, another a lute, and the third seems to be joining in song or possibly guiding the lute play. The gentle strumming and bowing seem to lull the Christ Child into a peaceful slumber, enhancing the overall sense of tranquility and celestial grace. The forest background with its soft, muted tones suggests a secluded and hallowed place, adding to the sacred atmosphere of the scene.Bouguereau's use of light accentuates the purity and smoothness of the figures' skin, and his expert brushwork in the drapery of Mary's robe adds depth and texture. "The Song of the Angels" is not only a visual delight but also a masterpiece evoking the heavenly music and protective love surrounding the infant Jesus.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
