More about this artwork

Albert Bierstadt, renowned for his sweeping landscapes of the American West, occasionally ventured into other subject matters, as is the case with the evocative painting titled "Two Horses." This artwork, somewhat of a departure from his vast mountainous scenes, offers an intimate glimpse into the serene world of two horses in their natural environment. The painting captures a moment of tranquility where two horses stand gracefully under the calm, shadowy ambiance typical of Bierstadt's work. On the left, a dark, almost solid brown horse is depicted with its head turned slightly away from the viewer, conveying a sense of gentle aloofness. Contrastingly, the horse on the right bears a striking patched pattern of white and deep reddish-brown hues. This horse faces towards the viewer, its gaze almost engaging with a soft curiosity. The backdrop of dark green foliage, barely discernible in the dim light, focuses the viewer's attention on the detailed texture of the horses’ coats and the gentle play of light across their forms. As with many of Bierstadt’s pieces, the skillful use of lighting creates a luminous effect, highlighting the natural beauty and noble spirit of these animals."Two Horses" is a testament to Bierstadt’s versatility and his profound ability to capture the essence of his subjects, whether majestic landscapes or the quiet dignity of wildlife.

Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830 – February 18, 1902) was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. He joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion to paint the scenes. He was not the first artist to record the sites, but he was the foremost painter of them for the remainder of the 19th century.
