More about this artwork

"Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" is a captivating oil painting by the eminent American artist John Singer Sargent, completed in 1885. This exquisite artwork presents an enchanting twilight scene set within a lush garden brimming with blooming flowers. Center stage in this painting are two young girls, captured in the midst of lighting paper lanterns amidst the delicate petals of carnations and lilies. The title of the painting, "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose," derives from the refrain of a popular song of the era, reflecting the floral harmony that envelops the scene. The lighting, a mix of the fading natural light of dusk and the warm glow from the lanterns, creates a soft, almost magical atmosphere that enhances the ethereal quality of the moment.Sargent’s intricate detail to the flowers and the radiant light effect not only showcases his mastery of oil paints but also his ability to evoke emotion and ambiance. The girls, absorbed in their task, convey a sense of innocence and focus, a serene moment frozen in time.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
