More about this artwork

Borgo San Lorenzo, painted by John Singer Sargent circa 1910, captures the serene essence of this Italian town in a masterful watercolor composition. Sargent’s skill in rendering architectural detail with fluid, evocative brush strokes brings this quaint scene to life. The painting showcases a corner of the town, featuring an old building with weathered walls and wooden shutters, some of which are open, adding a lively contrast to the solid forms. The artist’s use of light and shadow subtly plays across the building’s façade, creating a sense of depth and texture. The earthy palette, dominated by soft browns, faint blues, and hints of green, conjures the warmth and rustic charm of Borgo San Lorenzo. The washes of color bleed and merge effortlessly, a testament to Sargent’s mastery in watercolor technique. The strokes are loose yet deliberate, allowing the viewer’s eye to wander and piece together the quietude and simplicity of the scene. This painting, like many of Sargent’s works, emphasizes mood and atmosphere over precise detail, inviting viewers to experience a moment of tranquil reflection. It serves not only as a visual representation of the town but also as an invitation to explore the quieter, more introspective aspects of everyday scenery.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
