More about this artwork

1907)Artist: John Singer Sargent"By the Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati, Italy" is a captivating work by the eminent American artist John Singer Sargent. Known for his mastery in capturing light and movement, Sargent presents a scene that is both evocative and enigmatic. This charcoal sketch, created around 1907, showcases his skillful use of loose, expressive strokes to convey atmosphere and a sense of fleeting moments. The painting renders a figure standing by a fountain, likely in the gardens of the Villa Torlonia in Frascati, Italy. The villa, known for its classical architecture and beautifully intricate gardens, serves as an exquisite backdrop. The figure, draped in flowing garments that suggest movement, is highlighted against the darkened foliage and architectural elements. The contrast between the soft, billowing lines of the clothing and the structured, linear forms of the architecture around the fountain creates a dynamic visual dialogue. This work is characteristic of Sargent’s ability to blend immediacy and a detailed, thoughtful composition. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the abstract quality of the charcoal, invites viewers to linger, ponder, and appreciate the serene yet complex beauty of a moment captured in time. It’s a testament to Sargent’s enduring fascination with outdoor spaces and his prowess in portraying them with such vibrancy and depth.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
