More about this artwork

Welcome to a visual journey into the magnificent artistry of John Singer Sargent with the portrait titled "Charles Stewart, Sixth Marquess of Londonderry, Carrying the Great Sword of State at the Coronation Of King Edward VII."This captivating oil on canvas, painted in 1904, showcases Sargent’s unparalleled ability to imbue his portraits with grandeur while capturing a moment steeped in ceremonial significance. The painting depicts Charles Stewart, the Sixth Marquess of Londonderry, in full regalia, carrying the ceremonial Great Sword of State at the coronation of King Edward VII. The Marquess stands with a commanding presence at the forefront of the composition, dressed in an elaborately decorated white uniform, complete with gleaming medals and regal accouterments that signify his high status and role at the event. He holds the ornate sword firmly, its richly decorated handle and long blade gleaming under the soft light that filters through the gothic architecture of the setting, which hints at the interior of a grand cathedral. Standing slightly behind him to his right is a young page dressed in a similar, though less ornamented, attire, looking up in admiration. Sargent's masterful use of light not only highlights the textures and colors of their ceremonial clothes but also adds a nearly ethereal atmosphere to the scene. This painting not only captures an important historical moment but also embodies the regality and pomp of British tradition, rendered with Sargent’s characteristic brushwork and attention to detail.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
