More about this artwork

This intriguing piece, titled "Motorcycle (1918)," is a departure from the renowned portraits typically associated with John Singer Sargent. In a soft pencil sketch dated October 1918, Sargent captures the essence of an early motorcycle in striking detail. This drawing encapsulates the industrial era's innovation, highlighting the mechanical aesthetics of its time. The sketch provides a detailed view of the motorcycle from a front perspective, emphasizing components such as the front wheel, headlight, handlebars, and the framing. Sargent’s ability to render the complex construction of the motorcycle with such finesse, using only pencil, attests to his mastery of form and observation. The delicate shading and precise lines give the machine a lightweight, almost ethereal quality, contrasting sharply with the solid and utilitarian nature typical of early 20th-century machinery. In the top right corner, Sargent’s handwritten notes add a personal touch to the artwork and serve to authenticate the moment it captures. This piece not only showcases a fascination with machinery but also immortalizes a pivotal moment in the technological advances of the time, offering a rare glimpse into the more explorative and experimental facets of Sargent's artistry.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
