More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Portrait of John Alfred Parsons Millet," a captivating work by the esteemed American artist John Singer Sargent, created in 1892. This painting captures the image of John Alfred Parsons Millet, son of the notable British painter Frank Millet. Exhibiting Sargent's masterful technique, the portrait provides a poignant glimpse into the tender innocence and contemplative mood of a young child. The subject is depicted with a striking naturalism, seated informally yet seeming poised beyond his years. His wavy, chestnut hair frames his delicate, thoughtful face, drawing the viewer's focus to his strikingly direct gaze. The light cascades across his loosely worn white blouse, highlighting the soft texture and creating a gentle contrast with the darker, obscure background.Adding to the painting's visual interest, John Alfred's arm rests elegantly on a vibrantly colored cushion, the rich red tones adorned with floral designs complementing the overall palette and enhancing the composition's depth. Sargent's brushwork is fluid and confident, capturing both the softness of the child's visage and the dynamic, lively folds of his garment. This painting not only showcases Sargent’s exquisite skill in rendering human expressions and textiles but also reflects the profound connection between the artist and his subject.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
