More about this artwork

Le Verre De Porto (A Dinner Table At Night) is a captivating painting by the celebrated artist John Singer Sargent, which intricately captures an intimate dining scene lit by the warm glow of table lamps. This evocative artwork immerses viewers into a sophisticated evening ambiance, where a couple engages in quiet conversation. At the center of the painting is a woman dressed in an elegant black gown with delicate detailing around the neckline, her expression thoughtful, perhaps engaged in listening. Next to her, the man, seen only partially, appears to be in mid-discussion, contributing to the scene's dynamic yet relaxed atmosphere. The table is adorned with a white tablecloth that brilliantly reflects the rosy light from the tabletop lamps, emphasizing the rich tones and setting a serene mood. Among the table setting are crystal glasses, a wine bottle, and vibrant red flowers, adding a burst of color and an aesthetic of refined leisure.Sargent's mastery in using contrast to evoke mood and focus is evident—as the darker, shadowy background with murkily painted walls and obscure artworks, directs all attention to the faces of the diners and the brightly illuminated center of the table.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
