More about this artwork

John Singer Sargent, an illustrious American artist celebrated for his portraits, splendidly captures a serene moment in "Breakfast in the Loggia." This painting, created between 1917 and 1919, highlights Sargent's mastery in depicting light and his delicate handling of everyday leisure scenes. The composition invites viewers into an intimate breakfast setting nestled within a sunlit loggia. Two figures, elegantly dressed, sit at a small table adorned with a pristine white cloth, surrounded by a tranquil landscape. The scene is bathed in warm sunlight that filters through the loggia’s architectural elements and leafy greens, casting playful shadows and illuminating the subjects with a natural glow. The foreground features a woman in a vibrantly blue dress, engaging in conversation with her companion, who is clad in lighter, summery attire. The gentle interaction between them, paired with the leisurely setting, evokes a sense of calm and contentment. Further enriching the scene is a delicate statuette, central to the table, surrounded by an array of breakfast items and fine china, hinting at a genteel lifestyle and the simple pleasures of a leisurely morning.Sargent's technique of loose, expressive brushstrokes conveys not just the physical beauty of the setting but also the ephemeral quality of the moment. Each brushstroke and color choice builds up the texture and depth, making "Breakfast in the Loggia" not just a visual experience but an invitation into a peaceful slice of early 20th century life.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
