More about this artwork

Currently featured on our website is the arresting study drawing titled “Study for ‘Dogma of the Redemption – Frieze of Angels’ (recto)” by the eminent American artist John Singer Sargent, created between 1895 and 1903. This pencil on paper sketch offers a profound insight into Sargent’s preparatory process for his larger works, marking a significant piece in his body of religious and allegorical art.The drawing depicts a solitary angelic figure clad in voluminous robes, holding the traditional symbols of Christian faith—keys in one hand and an orb in the other. This representation likely signifies guardianship and divine authority, themes commonly explored in Christian iconography. The figure's serene expression and forward gaze impart a sense of calm authority and ethereal presence.Sargent’s mastery in rendering garments is evident here, with the flowing lines and thoughtful shading providing a realistic texture to the angel’s attire. The skillful use of light and shadow in the drawing reveals his technical prowess and ability to convey depth and form with seemingly effortless strokes. This study not only underscores Sargent’s dedication to the theme of spiritual redemption but also serves as an exquisite example of his talent in capturing the essence of celestial beings. Yet, it retains an intriguing air of mystery, inviting the viewer to ponder over the deeper symbolic meanings encompassed within this ethereal figure.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
