More about this artwork

The painting "Das Spielpferd" (The Toy Horse), created by Karl Wiener between 1919 and 1920, is a delightful embodiment of nostalgia and the simple joys of childhood. At the center of this vibrant artwork is a whimsically rendered toy horse, depicted in bold, expressive colors against a lush teal background that invites the viewer into a world of imagination and play.Karl Wiener's style here is deceptively straightforward, with clean lines and a clear, uncluttered composition that emphasizes the central figure of the horse. The horse itself is portrayed in shades of white and tan, offset by dark brown hooves and a striking maroon saddle, suggesting a cherished object that is both well-loved and fantastical. The brightness of the colors and the firm outlines give the painting a storybook quality, resonant of the folk art tradition.Above and below the image, the title "Das Spielpferd" and the mention of a novella by Karl Müller are inscribed in a decorative script, which frames the horse and reinforces the painting’s narrative element. This textual component suggests that the work may have been intended as an illustration, possibly for Müller's novella, thereby intertwining visual art with literary storytelling."Das Spielpferd" by Karl Wiener captures the innocence and wonder of childhood, making it a timeless piece that speaks to the universal joy of youthful imagination.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
