More about this artwork

This resonant portrait, painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1610, captures the intense and thoughtful gaze of his brother, Philippe Rubens. Set against a muted, earthy background that helps accentuate the subject, the painting focuses on Philippe’s face, showing his deep brown eyes and a well-groomed beard, framed by his slightly disheveled hair. His gaze, directed slightly to the side, evokes a sense of contemplation or distant attention.Philippe is attired in a dark, unadorned garment, a choice that ensures all attention is drawn to his face and the grand, white ruffled collar encircling his neck—a fashionable piece of the 17th-century wardrobe that adds both texture and contrast to the composition.Peter Paul Rubens, renowned for his vivid representation of movement and texture, employs smooth yet dynamic brushstrokes to bring life to Philippe’s facial features and expressions.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
