More about this artwork

Dive into the rich, eloquent expressiveness of Peter Paul Rubens in this refined painting, titled "Portrait of a Woman, Probably Susanna Lunden (Susanna Fourment, 1599–1628)," created around 1625–27. This work captivatingly portrays Susanna Fourment, thought to be the artist's sister-in-law, a figure Rubens frequently depicted, immortalized here during her adult years. In this portrait, Susanna is adorned in a lush black gown with a plunging neckline, complemented by a delicate pearl necklace that gently rests at her collar, symbolizing her status and grace. Her attire is further accented by a sheer, black veil and a golden headband, adding a layer of mystery and nobility to her demeanor. The gentle touch of her hand adjusting the veil and the soft, diffused light that caresses her skin and fabric bring a lifelike warmth to the painting.Rubens' mastery of texture and light is evident in the vivid rendering of the materials and the flesh, showcasing his skill in creating depth and realism. The background, subdued in tone, ensures that our focus remains unswayed on the subject's engaging gaze that seems to observe something beyond the canvas, inviting viewers to ponder the thoughts hiding behind those introspective eyes. This striking portrait not only showcases Rubens' expert brushwork and understanding of human anatomy but also offers a glimpse into the personal life and social context of 17th-century Flemish society.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
