More about this artwork

"The Stigmatisation of Saint Francis of Assisi" is a compelling painting by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens, created circa 1633. The work vividly depicts the mystical experience of Saint Francis of Assisi, an event where he received the wounds of Christ, known as stigmata. In this dramatic portrayal, Saint Francis appears in the lower central part of the canvas, his expression one of awe and reverence as he looks towards the heavens. Dressed in the humble brown habit of his order, the Franciscans, his gaze is directed at a seraphim—partially angelic and partially crucified Christ. This celestial being, with its striking golden radiance, directs beams of light towards Francis that mark his hands, feet, and side with stigmata, echoing the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. The background of the painting is equally expressive, featuring a richly detailed landscape that underscores the supernatural event taking place. Cliffs, trees, and distant mountains envelop the scene, lending it a sense of isolation and spiritual significance. The dark, swirling clouds above suggest the divine presence and the momentous nature of the event.Rubens' mastery in capturing the physical and emotional intensity of Saint Francis’s stigmatic experience is evident in the dynamic composition and the powerful contrast between light and shadow, highlighting the divine interaction. This artwork not only serves as a profound religious symbol but also showcases Rubens' skill in creating deeply moving and spiritually charged scenes.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
