More about this artwork

Our current exhibit features a compelling piece by Austrian painter Egon Schiele, titled "Mother and Daughter" created in 1913. This painting showcases Schiele's signature style of expressive line work and bold contortion of forms, creating an emotional depth that is both striking and profound. This work captures an intimate and tender moment between a mother and her child. Schiele's use of sharp, angular lines combined with a minimal but potent use of color accentuates the emotional connection between the two figures. The mother, depicted in a vibrant red dress, holds her daughter closely against her. The daughter, with her back towards the viewer, appears to meld into her mother's form, suggesting a deep bond and dependence. The simplicity of the background serves to highlight the complexity of human emotions and relationships portrayed in the foreground. Schiele's art often explored themes of vulnerability and intimacy, and "Mother and Daughter" is a poignant example of his ability to convey profound human experiences through minimal yet expressive forms. This painting not only represents the external appearance of its subjects but also invites viewers to contemplate the deeper emotional resonance of familial bonds, depicted through Schiele’s dramatic and emotive style. As you take in this piece, consider the layers of meaning behind the gesture, expression, and colors chosen by Schiele, and how they might speak to the universal experiences of love, protection, and kinship.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
