More about this artwork

Egon Schiele's painting titled "Tänzerin mit rot-weißem Rock" (Dancer with Red-White Skirt) from 1918 showcases the artist's unique ability to capture expressive movement through abstracted forms and vivid colors. In this evocative work, Schiele depicts a dancer in mid-performance, her dynamic posture and swirling skirt suggesting a moment of intense emotional or physical release. The rich green background and deep black outlines enhance the striking contrast of the dancer's red and white skirt, emphasizing both the fluidity of her movement and the dramatic tension inherent in her pose. The dancer’s limbs are abstractly rendered, twisting and stretching in a manner that conveys a sense of rhythmic and almost spontaneous motion. This piece is a brilliant example of Schiele’s departure from traditional representations and an exploration into a more expressionistic portrayal of figures. It embodies the central themes of energy and expression that characterize much of Schiele's work, offering a stark, emotional insight into the human condition through the lens of dance.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
