More about this artwork

The painting portrays an old, weathered building sitting close to a river, its reflection faintly mirroring in the water below. The structure's facade is a tapestry of aging plaster and exposed brick, punctuated by a variety of windows, some arched, some rectangular. Notably, a few clothes are hung out to dry, flapping gently in the breeze on a balcony, adding a touch of everyday life to the scene. The building has several levels, each seeming to tell a different story with their unique windows and uneven roofing. Warm, earthy tones dominate the painting, evoking a sense of wear and history, while subtle touches of red and white on the building add contrast and vibrancy.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
