More about this artwork
In the painting, a man sits comfortably in a plush, green chair, surrounded by an overwhelming array of books that form a dense, almost chaotic backdrop. He is dressed in a dark suit and vest, with a white shirt and bow tie peeping out. His hair is neatly combed, and his face shows age with a thoughtful, perhaps introspective expression. In his hands, he holds an open book, to which his eyes seem to be lowered, suggesting engagement with the content. The colors are rich and deep, with the books rendered in varying shades of earth tones, creating a textured and layered effect.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
