More about this artwork

The artwork depicts a woman drawn in a stark, expressive style characteristic of Egon Schiele. She has an elongated, oval face with striking features: large, dark eyes, and full, red lips slightly parted. Her gaze, directed straight at the viewer, is intense and somewhat haunting. She wears a large, floppy hat that casts a shadow over her forehead and eyes, enhancing the dramatic effect. Her attire suggests a high-collared shirt, tightly buttoned, and her posture is stiff, with her right hand raised to her cheek in a thoughtful or contemplative gesture. The drawing uses minimal lines, yet it conveys a profound depth of character and emotion.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
