More about this artwork

The artwork you are referring to, titled "Tiger Body, Standing in Human Posture" by George Stubbs, depicts a fascinating and surreal depiction of a tiger with human-like characteristics in its posture and stance. This drawing showcases a tiger standing upright on two legs, a position predominantly associated with humans. The creature's arms and fingers are expressed with remarkable detail, featuring elongated human-like limbs yet maintaining the distinct, fierce claws of a tiger.Stubbs' piece brilliantly blends elements of both the animal and the human form, creating a striking, anthropomorphic figure. The tiger's face, though unmistakably that of a wild cat with its sharp fangs and intense gaze, is set atop a body that carries muscle and bone structure reminiscent of a human torso and limbs. This representation might evoke various interpretations, perhaps commenting on the primal nature within humans or exploring themes of transformation and hybridity. Moreover, the detailed sketching and anatomical precision reflect Stubbs' well-known proficiency and interest in both human and animal anatomy, making this artwork not just a visual intrigue but also an exploration of form and biology.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
