More about this artwork

The painting "Design for the cover of the almanac ‘The Blue Rider’ (1911)" by Wassily Kandinsky, showcases a vibrantly expressive composition typical of his groundbreaking approach to abstract art. In this work, Kandinsky combines vivid hues and whimsical shapes to form what appears to be a fantastical scene centered around a horse and rider, nestled within an arched framework. The central motif, a white horse, stands prominently, with its limbs portrayed in a stylized, almost playful manner. Above the horse is a figure that might represent a rider, depicted in a contrasting dark color. This figure appears to be melding into or emerging from the horse, which emphasizes the sense of unity and fluidity Kandinsky often explored in his work. The background of the painting is filled with bold color washes and organic shapes, including areas of deep blue and swirling green, possibly suggesting a landscape or abstract space. The arch above the horse is ornamented with a semi-circular pattern filled with dots and surrounded by a fiery red hue that could evoke a sense of vitality and energy. The lower part of the image includes a remarkable semicircular form reminiscent of a horizon or a setting sun, rendered in a gradient from green to a reddish center, imbuing the piece with a dynamic movement. This painting not only served as a cover design but also as a visual representation of the ideas behind The Blue Rider Almanac, co-founded by Kandinsky.
