More about this artwork

This painting by Wassily Kandinsky, titled "Design for the cover of the almanac ‘The Blue Rider’ III (1911)," is a vibrant and intriguing work, rich with symbolic elements and abstract forms, which is characteristic of Kandinsky's style. At the top of the composition, two large, crescent-like shapes meet at the center, creating a circular form that might be interpreted as the sun or moon, due to the radiating blue and yellow colors. The name "DER BLAUE REITER" (The Blue Rider) is prominently displayed in this section, indicating its purpose as a cover for the almanac.Beneath this, in the center of the composition, is a circular image featuring what appears to be a white horse and a rider against a dark blue background, highlighted by a yellow area that could suggest movement or light. The horse and rider motif resonates with the name of the almanac, "The Blue Rider," where the horse often symbolizes freedom and spiritual pursuit, themes dear to Kandinsky and central to the Blue Rider group's philosophy. The background adds a dynamic quality with abstract elements that include what appear to be clouds or fantastical forms, and green diagonal lines suggesting rays of light or energy.
