More about this artwork

The painting titled "Murnau, Burggrabenstrasse 1, 1908" by Wassily Kandinsky is a vivid and texturally rich portrayal of a street scene in Murnau, a town located in Bavaria, Germany. Created in 1908, this artwork is a remarkable example of Kandinsky's transition from representational painting to his more abstract and expressive works that he would develop later. In this painting, we observe a street lined with colorful houses, the architecture rendered with bold, simplified forms that suggest the outlines of buildings rather than detailing them precisely. The houses are painted in a palette of bright yellows, blues, and pinks, contrasting sharply with the dark tones used for the street and the deep blue and black of the night sky, which suggests a time of day just after sunset or during early night. The composition is dynamically angled, with the street receding into the depth of the painting, leading the viewer's eye towards a cluster of homes at the focal point. The use of perspective and the angular lines lend a sense of movement and depth to the scene. The brushwork is expressive and loose, contributing to the vibrancy and energy of the painting.Kandinsky’s use of color is particularly striking.
