More about this artwork

This painting, "Portrait of Ludwig Berger" by Max Beckmann, is a vivid and expressionistic depiction of the subject. Ludwig Berger, portrayed here, appears to be a middle-aged man, rendered with striking facial features that convey a sense of depth and introspection. Beckmann’s use of bold, thick strokes and a dark color palette adds a certain intensity to the portrait. The subject is dressed in a dark suit with a light shirt and a tie visible beneath a blue jacket. His attire and the manner in which he gazes directly at the viewer suggest formality and a strong presence. The right hand is positioned delicately holding a pair of glasses and a stem of a flower, possibly suggesting Berger's sensitivity or a link to the creative or intellectual pursuits he may be associated with. The background of the portrait is rather plain, allowing the viewer to focus more on the figure. There's a touch of warmer color on the left which might be a curtain or part of the interior setting, contrasting with the cooler tones used for the figure. This painting is typical of Beckmann’s style, which is known for its emotional intensity and use of heavy outlines. Berger's expression and pose, along with Beckmann’s characteristic brushwork, come together to create a powerful portrayal that captures more than just the physical likeness of the subject—also projecting his personality and perhaps even his state of mind.

Actors, cabaret singers, heroes and thugs in a harsh postwar urban life by German artist Max Beckmann (1884-1950). His paintings show boldness, lust, and pain through delineated figures. The Nazi rule forced Beckmann to resign as an art professor and declared his artworks as degenerate. He later left for America where he lived in exile, yet remained active as an artist.
