More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Yamauba Playing With The Young Kintoki" by Kitagawa Utamaro, beautifully captures a tender and intimate moment between the two characters from traditional Japanese folklore. Yamauba, a mythical mountain witch known for her nurturing yet supernatural qualities, is depicted engaging gently with the young Kintoki. Kintoki, who later becomes the legendary folk hero Sakata Kintoki (often known as Kintaro), is portrayed as a child here. The artwork shows Yamauba, with deeply expressive and contemplative eyes, tenderly looking at Kintoki while playfully touching his cheek. The young Kintoki, with rosy cheeks and a bold expression, appears animated and full of life, his body playfully twisted as if in motion. The contrast between Yamauba’s calm, mature demeanor and Kintoki’s youthful energy and playful posture creates a dynamic visual narrative.Utamaro's use of fine lines and careful shading in the hair and delicate facial features of Yamauba adds a depth and realism to the character, while the simple yet effective use of color focuses the viewer's attention on the figures themselves.
