More about this artwork

The painting "Sister Is Crying" by Peter Hansen presents a poignant domestic scene captured in soft watercolor hues. The artwork features a woman, dressed in a light blue gown, leaning attentively over a bed where a small child lies. The child's expression is one of distress, mouth open as if crying or wailing, which brings a palpable sense of urgency and emotional weight to the scene. The room is painted with tender realism, showing details of a daily life setting—such as the wooden chair and the cast iron stove in the background, adding to the historical and cultural context of the painting. The soft, washed-out colors of the watercolor enhance the mood of the scene, conveying a sense of delicateness and sensitivity. The title "Sister Is Crying" suggests the relationship between the woman and child, providing a narrative that this might be an older sister caring for her younger sibling, showing a moment of familial care and concern. This scene could be capturing a moment of illness or distress for the child, with the elder sister taking on a comforting or nurturing role.Peter Hansen's art often focuses on such intimate, real-life moments, and this painting is a touching example of his ability to convey deep emotions and stories through his gentle and refined artistic style.

Coastal scenes, portraits, and art nudes by Peter Hansen (1868-1928). Hansen was a Danish painter known for his Impressionist style and his depictions of Danish landscapes and coastal scenes. In the 1890s, he traveled to Paris to study under some of the leading Impressionist painters of the time, such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. The French Impressionist movement had a major influence on Hansen's work, and he began to develop a style that combined the Impressionist techniques of broken color and light with the strong tradition of Danish landscape painting.
