More about this artwork

This painting by Magnus Enckell, titled "Portrait of a Young Girl," likely created between 1900 and 1925, depicts a close-up portrait of a young girl, shown from the shoulders up. The girl illustrated in this artwork has fair skin, rosy cheeks, and solemn yet engaging blue-grey eyes. Her hair is neatly combed back into what appears to be a braid, and it is highlighted with soft, pencil-drawn lines that convey texture and movement.Enckell has used a delicate blend of what seems to be pencil and pastel to create a tender and realistic representation, highlighting the girl's youthful features with a subtle but effective use of color. Her clothing, although not fully detailed in the image, suggests a simple high-collared white blouse or dress, implying a sense of modesty and the fashion of that period. The expression captured by Enckell is one of contemplation and a quiet presence, which when combined with his soft drawing style, lends an ethereal and timeless quality to the work. Enckell's attention to the subtle play of light on the girl's face also adds depth, bringing her countenance to life amid the otherwise lightly sketched or incomplete sections of the canvas. This focus on the details of the face while leaving other areas sketchy creates an intriguing contrast that draws viewers directly to her gaze, encouraging a moment of connection and reflection.
