Diana’s affection for Endymion is such that she begged for his eternal youth and immortality, so he could sleep forever, unaging, and she could visit him each night.In Enckell's interpretation, these figures are set against a backdrop that is both dreamlike and serene. The foreground features Endymion, lying asleep or possibly in a state of eternal rest, on a grassy knoll. His form is relaxed and peaceful, hinting at the tranquility of eternal sleep. Contrastingly, the figure of Diana is seen standing by a tree to his left, depicted as a nude form, symbolizing both vulnerability and her divine nature. Her posture, looking over Endymion, evokes a sense of longing and tenderness.The landscape behind these figures stretches into soft, faded hues reflecting perhaps the dim light of the moon or the first blush of dawn.

Magnus Enckell (1870-1925) was a Finnish painter and graphic artist who was born in Helsinki. He studied at the Ateneum School of Art and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. Enckell was greatly influenced by the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements, and his work often featured moody and dreamlike landscapes and portraits. He was one of the leading figures of Finnish art in the early 20th century, and his work helped to shape the development of modernist art in Finland. He passed away in 1925 at the age of 55, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists to this day.
