More about this artwork

This painting, "Zinnia" by Hannah Borger Overbeck, is an elegant and beautifully detailed botanical artwork that combines elements of both nature and human organization. The central focus are various zinnias, vividly colored in orange, yellow, and white hues, which are depicted with a stylized yet somewhat realistic approach. The flowers are arranged against a backdrop of soft blue, and are intertwined with rich green leaves, giving the image a lush, vibrant feel.To the right of the image, there is an ornate insert of a calendar for the month of September 1903, which is finely detailed with an intricate border. This feature blends the natural beauty of the zinnias with a human element of time, indicating either the time of year these flowers bloom or a significant month related to the artwork or artist. The use of thick outlines and flat areas of color are reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts movement, emphasizing craftsmanship and natural beauty. The overall composition is balanced and harmonious, creating a peaceful yet engaging visual experience. The inclusion of a calendar also suggests the painting may have been practical as well as decorative, perhaps originally part of a series or an almanac highlighting different flowers throughout the year.
