More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Skiffs" by Gustave Caillebotte, captures an idyllic and serene boating scene. The focus is on two slender skiffs gliding across a placid river. The water is rendered in beautiful shades of blue and green, reflecting the soft light and the surrounding verdant foliage. In the foreground, a figure dressed in white, wearing a straw hat, deftly handles a set of yellow oars, seeming at ease within the small boat. Behind this figure, another boat follows, operated by someone similarly attired in light, summery clothes and a hat, adding depth and a quiet harmony to the scene.Caillebotte’s treatment of light and texture, as well as his attention to detail in the dappling of light on the water and the gentle ripples around the boats, suggests a moment of peaceful leisure. The combinations of these elements evoke a sense of calm, placing the viewer right alongside the rowers in this tranquil escape into nature.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter who combined impressionist and academic styles in his artworks. Despite the fact that he is considered a great impressionist artist today, his posthumous reputation was not as significant. Most of his paintings were kept by his family and not exhibited nor reproduced until the late 20th century. His artworks depict scenes from Parisian streets, modern urban environments, as well as rural country scenes and flowers.
