More about this artwork

The painting titled "Carcase of an Ox" by Theodor Philipsen presents a stark and somewhat somber scene from a butcher's setting. In the image, the central focus is on the suspended carcass of an ox, hung by its hind legs, with its head severed and lying on the ground nearby. The representation of the ox is vivid and unflinched with details like the exposed muscles and sinews painted in a realistic manner, conveying the raw reality of animal butchery. The surrounding environment further enhances the somber mood of the painting. A dark, earth-toned color palette dominates the scene, and the background features a few other elements that suggest this setting is a slaughterhouse or a similar place. Notably, there are living calves depicted, one white and one black, observing the scene with seeming curiosity or bewilderment, adding a poignant layer of life continuing in the presence of death.Additional elements like a red bowl, possibly containing food or water, and a wooden block, likely used for chopping, are visible on the floor. A single piece of meat hangs from the wall in the background, reinforcing the operational purpose of the space.Overall, Philipsen’s work captures the brutal reality of livestock slaughter with a somber and reflective tone, possibly inviting the viewer to ponder the cycle of life and death in agriculture, as well as the relationships between humans and animals.

Theodor Esbern Philipsen (1840-1920) was a Danish painter known for his landscapes, animal portraits, and small figures in wax and clay. He was a prominent figure in the Danish art scene and was particularly known for his skillful depictions of the Danish countryside and animals. He was particularly skilled in capturing the mood and atmosphere of rural landscapes, often working en plein air, and his paintings are filled with a sense of light and movement. Philipsen's animal portraits are also known for their realism, with animals that look and feel alive in the paintings. He was active in the art association of Denmark and was part of the group of painters called the Fynboerne or the Funen Painters, which was a society of Danish artists who were known for their landscapes and genre scenes.
