More about this artwork

"May Milton" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is a striking color lithograph that captures a woman in a dynamic pose. The painting features a single figure, May Milton, a dancer of English origin who performed in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Lautrec, known for his vivid poster art and depictions of Parisian nightlife, often illustrated performers, and this work is an example of his fascination with the entertainment world. In this composition, Milton is shown in mid-twirl, her dress billowing around her as she dances. The dress is flowing and ghostly white, contrasting sharply with the deep blue of the background, which enhances her ethereal presence. Lautrec's use of bold outlines and flat areas of color reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, contributing to the graphic and theatrical quality of the work. Her face is shown with a slight, mysterious smile, adding an enigmatic charm. The name "May Milton" curves around her figure in stylized lettering, emphasizing her importance and perhaps symbolizing the way her identity is caught up in her public performances.Additionally, there is a partial depiction of a chair at the left, which has a patterned upholstery, suggesting a sophisticated setting, possibly hinting at the private salons or theaters where she might have performed.Overall, the work is celebrated for its expression of movement and its vibrant yet simple aesthetic, typical of Toulouse-Lautrec’s style.

Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec (1864–1901), was an aristocratic alcoholic French artist known for his socially unacceptable lifestyle. He observed and documented the Parisian nightlife through his post-impressionist artworks. Sharing a similar style as other well-known French artists such as Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat, he created memorable works of art depicting the lifestyle that he enjoyed before passing at a young age.
