More about this artwork

This vibrant painting by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec titled "Alfred La Guigne" captures a bustling Parisian scene with its unique style and energetic brushwork. The painting prominently features several figures, seemingly positioned in a café or a similar social setting. The central characters appear engaged partly in conversation and partly absorbed in their own thoughts or the environment. On the left, a woman whose face is partially visible seems to be talking to a man whose back is to the viewer. She sports an extravagant hat and a fur-trimmed coat, suggesting an air of style and affluence common in Parisian societal gatherings of the time. The man facing us, Alfred La Guigne, is depicted with a rather contemplative or distant expression, clad in a large overcoat and a dark hat, suggesting a cooler weather setting or an evening affair. To the right, another figure, possibly a young man, stands out distinctively due to his stylish attire and striking pose. His face is turned away, adding an element of mystery and aloofness to his character.

Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec (1864–1901), was an aristocratic alcoholic French artist known for his socially unacceptable lifestyle. He observed and documented the Parisian nightlife through his post-impressionist artworks. Sharing a similar style as other well-known French artists such as Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat, he created memorable works of art depicting the lifestyle that he enjoyed before passing at a young age.
