More about this artwork

This engaging painting by Marsden Hartley, titled "Pink and White Flowers in a Vase," presents a striking example of his bold, expressionistic style. Hartley uses rich, vibrant brush strokes to capture the essence rather than the literal details of the flowers and the vase. The flowers are rendered in a striking, abstract form, emphasizing the textural qualities and the interplay of colors. The painting showcases two prominent flowers, one with lush pink tones and another in a creamy white. These floral elements look robust and loosely defined, with broad, decisive strokes suggesting their petals and leaves, which are depicted in dark, contrasting shades. The background is executed in muted tones, helping the flowers to stand out vividly.Below the blooms, there is the vase, rendered with a rounded, simple shape that seems to glow from within, resonating with soft yellow and white hues. Hartley’s approach to the vase adds an element of mystery and light to the composition, suggesting depth and reflection without meticulous detail.Overall, the painting conveys a sense of passion and vitality through its expressive technique, captivating use of color, and dynamic composition, making it a compelling piece in Hartley’s body of work.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
