More about this artwork

This drawing by Marsden Hartley, titled "Self-Portrait," is an expressive sketch that captures the essence of the artist using fluid, dynamic lines. Hartley's use of gestural strokes conveys a sense of immediacy and insight into his emotional state or character. The portrait predominantly focuses on the artist’s face and upper body, represented with a series of swirling, almost volatile strokes that suggest movement and perhaps the tempestuous nature of his thoughts or mood. The face is depicted with somewhat exaggerated, intense features, especially around the deeply set eyes, which draw the viewer’s attention and may suggest introspection or a piercing self-awareness. The sketchiness of the lines implies that the artist executed this drawing quickly, prioritizing emotional expression over detailed physical likeness.Hartley's signature at the bottom anchors the portrait, affirming his identity and ownership of both the artistic style and the introspective portrayal. This self-portrait is a compelling example of how an artist can convey complex psychological states and a sense of self through abstracted and seemingly spontaneous artistic techniques.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
