More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Pink Begonias," created by Marsden Hartley, showcases a vibrant and somewhat abstract depiction of begonias. The artist has employed thick, expressive brush strokes, creating an almost tactile texture on the canvas. The begonias are painted in rich shades of pink and red, contrasting beautifully against a backdrop of dark and bright greens, hints of blues, and purples. The background is a soft, diffuse pink, suggesting either a close-up perspective of the flowers against a blurred backdrop or an artistic abstraction of their natural environment. The image resonates with a sense of movement and boldness, which is characteristic of Hartley's style. He often played with the balance between realism and abstraction, focusing on the emotional rendition of his subjects rather than strict representational accuracy. In "Pink Begonias," this tendency is evident in the way he emphasizes color contrasts and dynamic, almost dramatic brushwork to evoke the lushness and vitality of the blooming begonias. The simplicity of the composition, focusing solely on the flowers without other distractions, allows the viewer to immerse in their beauty and the feelings they evoke.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
