More about this artwork

This painting by Jules Pascin, titled "Horses In Landscape," depicts a serene and rustic scene featuring several horses in a countryside setting. The composition is spread with a gentle, earthy palette of browns, grays, and soft greens, which instills a calm, tranquil vibe. The scenery shows a vast landscape with rolling hills in the background and scattered buildings that hint at a rural village or farmstead.Foregrounded are the horses, depicted in a loose, almost sketch-like manner. The animals are variously posed; some graze while others stand or stroll leisurely, suggesting a moment of peaceful everyday life. Each horse is rendered with a different posture and varying tones, contributing to a dynamic yet harmonious arrangement. In addition to the equine subjects, there are subtle indications of human presence, like a figure on a horse, which provides a sense of scale and liveliness. The artwork's overall atmosphere is enhanced by the lightness of the touch and the fluidity of the brushstrokes, emblematic of Pascin’s style, which often explored themes of life and leisure with an expressive spontaneity. The backdrop of the painting features less detailed, almost impressionistic depictions of architecture and vegetation, which draw the eye across the composition and add depth to the scene.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
