More about this artwork

This painting by Jules Pascin, titled "Figures and Cat in Park," captures a lively and somewhat bustling scene in a park setting. The artist employs a loose and expressive style, which is characteristic of his work, using ink and wash that give it a fluid, dynamic quality. In the artwork, we see several figures that are sketched with quick, energetic lines, suggesting movement and a moment captured in time rather than a static scene. On the left side of the painting, there are two men seated on what may be a bench or similar park seating. The man closest to the viewer appears to be wearing a flat cap and has a stout build, while the second man, whose face is obscured or turned away, brings an element of mystery to their interaction. The central and right portions of the painting feature a standing man and woman deeply engaged in conversation. The man wears a suit and a hat, conveying a somewhat formal appearance, and the woman is dressed in a striped dress, her posture and expression animated as if she's making a point or sharing something exciting. Their engagement with each other is the focal point, drawing the viewer into their interaction.A small black cat is also included near the center, walking confidently across the scene and providing a contrast to the human figures with its small, delicate form against the broader strokes used to depict the people.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
