More about this artwork

This painting by Jules Pascin, titled "Figure Group, Man With Green Plaid Trousers," captures a lively yet subdued scene, imbued with a sense of everyday life and casual interaction. Created in 1915, the artwork depicts a group of people and a horse in what appears to be a quaint street or courtyard setting. The focus is distributed among several figures, each contributing to the narrative of a public yet intimate gathering. On the left, there is a figure, presumably a man, seen from behind, donning a hat and what appears to be the green plaid trousers mentioned in the title. This particular fashion detail adds a touch of color and personality to the scene. Next to him stands another man facing the viewer, also in a hat, possibly engaging with the person next to him or observing the scene. The center and right of the composition show a group of people gathered at an arched doorway, framed by intricately designed iron gates. Within this group, women and perhaps a child are visible, suggesting a social or communal interaction, possibly a moment of conversation or a pause in their daily activities.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
