More about this artwork

This artwork by Albert Edelfelt, titled "Selin Istuva Nuorukainen Kadetinpuvussa," portrays a young man seen from the back, seated in a contemplative pose. The drawing, executed in pencil, captures the figure with remarkable detail and a sense of delicacy, characteristic of Edelfelt’s skillful draftsmanship. The young man is dressed in what appears to be a cadet's uniform, suggesting themes of youth and military training prevalent in late 19th-century European art. The uniform is well delineated, showing elements like buttons and seams with fine lines that communicate the fabric's texture and fit.The choice to depict the subject from behind adds a sense of mystery and introspection, inviting viewers to ponder what the young cadet might be thinking or gazing at. The neutral background focuses all attention on the figure, highlighting the emotive and narrative potentials within the simplicity of the scene. This artwork elegantly blends realism with emotional depth, using only subtle details and soft shading.
