More about this artwork

This drawing by Albert Edelfelt is a study depicting a portrait of King Gustav III of Sweden. The image shows the painting within a decorative frame, located in an architectural setting that suggests a gallery or a similarly formal space. The portrait itself is sketched in a loose, impressionistic style. Gustav III is depicted in a seated position, dressed in what appears to be 18th-century attire, including a jacket with wide lapels, possibly suggesting a military or courtly uniform. The scene is framed by classical architectural elements, including a bust and decorative sculptures on ledge above, which perhaps denote Gustav III's esteemed status or contribute to the monumental feel of the portrayal. The text beneath the portrait identifies the subject and includes the date "Den IX Julii MDCCXC" (the 9th of July 1790), which is significant historically.Overall, the artwork is not only a representation of Gustav III but also a study in composition and form, capturing the essence of the subject through rapid, expressive strokes and a focus on overall effect rather than detailed accuracy.
