More about this artwork

This painting by Albert Edelfelt, titled "Self-Portrait In A Dress Of The 17th Century, Study," created around 1904-1905, features the artist himself depicted in an evocative and partly completed portraiture. The background of the painting is raw and minimally detailed, focusing predominantly on the artist's face and part of his attire.Edelfelt has painted himself with a direct and intense gaze, suggesting a reflection of his inner self or psychological state. His face is detailed with naturalistic colors, showing shadow and light playing across his features. He sports a bold mustache and his brow is slightly furrowed, adding to the intensity of his expression. The attire suggests a 17th-century style, seen in the broad white collar spreading out over the chest, which contrasts with his dark clothing and the stark brown of the background. The sketchy, unfinished quality of the clothing and background might imply that this work was a study in process, focusing on capturing the essence of the expression and period costume rather than completing a fully developed historical portrait. This artwork stands out as a personal exploration of identity and historical artistic styles, showcasing Edelfelt's skill in portraiture and his connection to art historical roots.
