More about this artwork

The etching titled "Suomalainen Talonpoika" by Albert Edelfelt, created between 1900 and 1905, is a compelling portrait of a Finnish peasant. The artwork features a tightly framed profile view of the subject, illustrating intricate details that bring out not only physical but also emotional characteristics. The man in the etching is shown with a rugged face, potentially marking him as someone who has lived a life of physical labor. The lines on his face suggest maturity and a life well-lived, perhaps with hardships typical of rural lifestyles of the time. His gaze is directed confidently outward, towards something unseen by the viewer, possibly hinting at a moment of contemplation or a distant focus. He is wearing a traditional cap which sits snugly on his head, conforming to and enhancing the outlined shape of his head and emphasizing the weathered textures of both the cap and his clothing. The expressive etching strokes adeptly capture the texture of the fabric and the folds inherent in the garment being worn.Albert Edelfelt’s mastery in etching techniques is evident in the varying depths of line work, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow on the man's face and clothing. The portrait is evocative and portrays a strong sense of character and identity, emblematic of the Finnish peasant life at the turn of the 20th century.
