More about this artwork

This painting by Henri Edmond Cross, titled "Venice," is a vibrant and lively watercolor depicting a bustling scene of the iconic Venetian waterfront. The artist uses light, fluid brushstrokes to create a sense of movement in the water and sky, which are rendered in a rich palette of blues, whites, and hints of purple. The sky is filled with dynamic cloud formations, suggesting a breezy day.The composition includes several boats, some with sails up, navigating the shimmering, rippled waters, adding to the painting’s dynamic energy. On the right, a group of people is depicted along the quayside, suggesting the vibrancy of daily life in Venice. The buildings, illustrated with a mix of warm earth tones, feature architectural details typical of Venetian constructions, including the prominent dome and bell tower which are common elements in the city's skyline. These structures are outlined with a light touch, allowing the colors and forms to meld smoothly together, achieving a striking balance between detail and impressionistic brushwork.Overall, Cross captures the essence of Venice with a joyful and vivid display of color and light, emphasizing the city’s beauty and bustling atmosphere. This work is exemplary of the artist’s skill in watercolor and his ability to convey a sense of place with emotional impact.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
